Killaloe , County Clare

Killaloe , County Clare

Scenic Killaloe is at The Southern tip of Lough Derg , the largest of the Shannon lakes. It’s most fascinating building is the 12th century St. Flannan’s Cathedral , which was restored in the 18th century. Beside the door is Thogrim’s Stone , a cross shaft with a unique bilingual inscription in ogham and Viking runes.

The message requests a blessing for Thogrim who carved it. In the churchyard is St. Flannan’s Oratory , a well-preserved 12th century church with a traditional stone roof. The 12th century St. Mo-Lua’s Oratory , beside the Catholic parish church , was removed from Friar’s Island in 1929 when the island was submerged for the Shannon hydroelectric scheme.

Killaloe is a real hidden gem and a must see on your Ireland tours.
