Lough Gill , County Sligo

Lough Gill , County Sligo

The 24 mile circuit of Lough Gill , a broad lake just east of Sligo with luscious woodland covering the small hills that rise off its indented banks , makes a great day-trip by bike from Sligo – or you could break the journey midway in Dromahair and allow yourself more time to explore. A great option for tours of Ireland….its a real hidden gem.

A trip out onto the lake – on which sits the isle of Innisfree , immortalized by Yeats – is easily accessible from the centre of Sligo: to walk to the lake , set off from Bridge Street east along the south bank of the river for about a mile to Doorly Park. Here , short woodland walks give views across the lake and a hint of the beauty that lies beyond. The Wild Rose water bus from Doorly Park out to Innisfree and Parke’s Castle is a wonderful journey by boat across the reed-whipped lake into the heart of Yeat’s country.
