Mourne Abbey

Mallow, County Cork

North of Cork city is the delightful town of Mallow.

It was once a fashionable Spa town but now most of its commerce centres on sugar beet processing.

It sits in the beautifully wooded valley of the River Blackwater.

Interesting things to see include the Spa Well, the Clock House, and the ruins of a fortress.

A great coffee or lunch stop on your tours of Ireland.

On the way to Mallow is “Mourne Abbey”

During the reign of King Edward, the third this was a walled town that contained a Preceptory of the Knights Templar.

Following the suppression of the Knights Templar it was presented to the Knights of St John of Jerusalem.

The remains of the church themselves are unremarkable.

But there is an interesting Templar tombstone in the nearby Kilshannig graveyard.

It’s just another hidden gem that we at Ireland and Scotland Luxury Tours like to visit as we pass.
