Rathmullan , County Donegal

Rathmullan , County Donegal

Northwest of Letterkenny is the lovely seaside resort on Lough Swilly was where Red Hugh O’Donnell was captured and taken to be imprisoned in Dublin Castle , one of the sparks which ignited a great war between the Gaelic Irish and the English Crown.

It was also from here that the Earls of Tyrone and Tyrconnell sailed to Continental Europe during the Flight of the Earls. A well-equipped heritage centre tells the story of the Flight and its effects. The remains of a 15th century Carmelite friary , whose church was converted into a stronghold in the 17th century , can also be seen.

Rathmullan is a real hidden gem and a must see on your tours of Ireland.
