Buncrana , County Donegal

Buncrana , County Donegal

The principle town of the Inishowen Peninsula , Buncrana is a straightforward seaside resort. It faces West across Lough Swilly with an extensive beach to the South (backed by hills). Worth a visit on Ireland tours.

The peninsula has a scenic drive round the coast that shows its wild and rugged cliffs. At the Western side the steep Urris Hills are separated by the Gap of Mamore from the Mamore Hills , with the Dunaff Cliffs beyond. On the East , around the heights of Inishowen Head there is a rocky coastline of cliffs with views across Lough Foyle and towards the Giant’s Causeway ; the most attractive inland scene is the 4 mile long Glen of Agiveney.

Malin Head at the tip of the peninsula is the most Northerly part of the Irish mainland and a bit of a hidden gem.

The small island of Inishtrahull , visible from Malin Head , is ‘Ultima Thule’ , known to the ancient world as one of the farthest outposts of Northern barbarism.

Noteworthy beaches at Pollan Strand ; between Buncrana and Fahan ; Shrove Strand below Inishowen Head ; Greencastle.
