Harris, or Na Hearadh, forms the southern part of Lewis and Harris in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. The island landscape changes markedly from the mountains of North Harris to the beaches, machair and rocky bays of South Harris.
Tarbert and North Harris
Tarbert sits on the narrow isthmus between North and South Harris and serves as an important harbour community. North Harris is the most mountainous part of the Outer Hebrides, dominated by rugged terrain and Clisham, the island group’s highest mountain.
The area is known for walking, wildlife and wide coastal views. Roads reach communities such as Huisinish and Rhenigidale, while the landscape reflects the close relationship between island life, crofting and the sea.
South Harris and the Golden Road
South and West Harris are recognised for white-shell beaches, dunes and flower-rich machair. The eastern side has a contrasting landscape of exposed rock, small lochs and sheltered bays.
The Golden Road follows part of the east coast between Tarbert and Rodel, linking settlements through the Bays of Harris. The route’s name is often associated with the expense of building a road across such difficult terrain, although local explanations vary.
Harris Tweed and island heritage
Harris is internationally associated with Harris Tweed, which is woven by islanders in their homes in the Outer Hebrides. Peat cutting, crofting, Gaelic culture and maritime traditions also remain important parts of the islands’ story.
St Clement’s Church at Rodel
At Rodel in South Harris stands St Clement’s Church, one of the most significant medieval buildings in the Western Isles. Historic Environment Scotland records that it was founded in the early sixteenth century by Alasdair Crotach MacLeod, whose carved tomb remains inside.
