Waterford, County Waterford

While this town is known mainly for its crystal, there are a number of other sites to visit.

It is worth a stop on any tours of Ireland, even if you do not want crystal!

The first settlers were the Danes, under the leadership of Sitric.

They founded a small defensive settlement there in about 850.

Reginald Tower is a fortified structure on the river.

It got the name from Governor Reginal McIvor in 1003.

It has served as a lookout tower and a prison.

Nearby there is the French Church.

This is a former convent dating from around 1240.

The eastern window of the chancel is especially beautiful.

In the past the church has served as a hospital for the people of Waterford.
