The Limerick Museum is a little-known gem in the heart of Limerick City. It sits on the west side of Saint John’s Square and is well worth a stop on any tour of Ireland.
The museum is housed in a modest 18th-century terrace. Inside, visitors will find an impressive collection of Stone Age pottery, vessels, stone axes, and arrowheads. There are also fascinating items from the Bronze Age and Iron Age.
Exhibits also explore the rich history of Limerick. One highlight is a pedestal known as the Nail, once used by merchants to settle debts. This tradition gave rise to the famous phrase “paying on the nail.”
Another display features a rare newspaper cutting about the Limerick Soviet. This short-lived event in April 1919 saw local trade unionists seize control of the city under British military rule. Strike committees ran Limerick for two weeks, even printing their own money, before martial law ended the movement.
For a unique insight into Irish history, Limerick Museum is a must-visit.
