Curraghmore House and Gardens are situated in Portlaw, County Wexford.
The house plus the 2,500 acres of formal gardens and woodland/grazing are worth a stop on any tours of Ireland.
Curraghmore was the seat of the Beresford family.
Parts of the house date back to the medieval castle that belonged to the Powers family.
James Power, Earl of Tyrone, rebuilt the house in the 1700s.
Make sure to take in the rusticated arches, pilasters, and pedimented niches with statues.
The imposing tower above the main door has Saint Huberts stag, with a crucifix between its antlers.
That was the crest of the Le Poer family (or the Power family).
The gardens are beautiful and on a large scale.
In the woods is Irelands tallest tree – a 156 feet Sitka spruce.
To the rear of the house, you will find an interesting mid-eighteenth-century curiosity.
The Shell House has an interior decorated with thousands of shells.
This was carried out by Lady Catherine Power, Countess of Tyrone.
There is a statue of the countess inside the Shell House.
