Ballycastle, County Antrim

This is a beautiful town on the North Coast of Ireland.
If you find yourself on the coast during tours of Ireland, be sure to make a stop.
It’s a great stop for “refreshments” but there is also plenty to see.
The views are spectacular right over to Rathlin Island.

Near the shore, to the right of the golf links, are the ruins of Bonamargy Abbey.
This was a Franciscan Friary dating from the 15th century.
In the nave of the church is the tombstone of Sorley Boye and Irish chieftain.
Sorley Boye fought the English but finally made his peace with Queen Elizabeth the First.
His son was the first Earl of Antrim.

There are also the ruins of Duneany Castle nearby.
This was the early residence of the MacDonnells and where Sorley Boye actually died.
