Balmaha, Loch Lomond

Balmaha, Loch Lomond, By Colin Smith

Balmaha, Loch Lomond

Once the first stopping place of the many paddle steamers cruising up Loch Lomond, Balmaha is situated on the south-east side of the loch, less accessible than the west side, which takes the road going north from Glasgow.

The sailors may head for any one of several tiny islands in the loch – Inchmurrin, perhaps, or Inchcailloch, which both have ancient ruins – or maybe in search of refreshment from the inn at Rowardennan. The last paddle boat to be built in the country, Maid of the Loch, still travels up Loch Lomond, stopping first at Balmaha.
