04 Sep Book of Kells , Trinity College , Dublin
This national treasure is kept on public display in the Long Room at Trinity College. It is a beautifully illuminated Latin text of the Gospels’ account of the life of Christ , and the most ornate of the Middle Age manuscripts to have survived.
The exact origins of the book are unknown but it dates from circa AD800. It was donated to the college by Bishop Henry Jones of Meath in 1661 , and the single volume was restored and rebound into four in 1953. It is usual for just one illuminated page and on of text to be on display.
The Book of Kells is a wonderful piece of history and a real must see on your Ireland tours.
