03 Feb Carrowmore , Ireland
If you are on tours of Ireland then Carrowmore is a real hidden gem.
It is an extensive megalithic cemetery , possibly started in the fifth millenium B.C.
It has been much depleted by stone -quarrying but was formerly the largest known collection of megalithic tombs in Ireland or Britain.
It is situated two miles west of Sligo town and on our Ireland tours we often pass through Sligo on route from Galway to Enniskillen (to see Devenish Island)
The tombs include passage-graves and dolmens with stone circles.
Some have been excavated by a Swedish mutidisciplinary archeology team.
