Castlecoole, County Fermanagh

Castlecoole, County Fermanagh

Castle Coole Frontage

This is an estate on the banks of Lough Coole, near the town of Enniskillen, in Northern Ireland.

If you are passing that way on any tours of Ireland it is worth a stop.

It has been the home of the Corry family since 1656.

The present house was completed in 1798, at great expense.

The house is built of Portland stone carried on carts from Ballyshannon, where it arrived by sea.

The joinery within the house is of the highest quality.

It was so good that the joiners were set to making furniture as well.

Castlecoole is an outstandingly successful example of late Georgian architecture.

There is a flock of Greylag geese on the shores of Lough Coole.

This is the only breeding colony in Ireland, or England.
