This is an old castle in Galway and an interesting stop on any tours of Ireland.
It sits on a small island in Lough Corrib.
Castlekirk is one of Irelands oldest Norman castles and thought to be one of the first mortared fortifications.
It has a rich history linked to the fierce O’Flaherty clan.
It is now in ruins, but one can feel the history and the atmosphere within the tumbledown walls.
The castle was built in the early 13th century by the King of Connaught.
It was destroyed by the forces of Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century.
During its existence as an occupied castle, it was fought for by the leading clans of the area – O’Connors, O’Flahertys, and Joyces.
There are also ties to the 16th century pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley.
The island can only be reached by boat.
But it is a true hidden gem of Ireland.
It is close to Ballynahinch Castle which we use regularly for our clients.
