Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin

Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin

At Ireland and Scotland Luxury Tours we usually start our clients in Dublin.

One of the sights we recommend is Christ Church Cathedral.

It’s a good place to visit on any tours of Ireland.

The cathedral has long been the centre of religious life in Ireland.

Its full title is Christ Church of the Holy Trinity.

Dunan, the first Bishop of Dublin, founded the first church on this site in about 1038.

The one that is there today was started in 1170.

The oldest portions are the crypt and the Romanesque portal on the south transept.

In the 12th century windows in the early Gothic style were added.

The present nave dates from about 1212.

Christ Church contains many tombs including that of Strongbow.

Richard de Clare, the 2nd Earl of Pembroke, also known as Richard FitzGilbert is Strongbow.

He was an Anglo-Norman nobleman who had a leading role in the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland.
