County Mayo

This is a general guide to some sights if you find yourself in County Mayo on any tours of Ireland.

Firstly take a look at Achill Island which is now connected by a bridge to the mainland.

Rosserk Abbey is an Franciscan abbey which is worth visiting and dates from the 15th century.

A Romanesque doorway leads into a single-nave church , with a splendid west window that goes back to the first stage of construction.

The window of the southern chapel does the same.

On one of the columns in the piscine there is a rare depiction of a round tower.

Moyne Abbey is also Franciscan , and also dates from the 15th century.

It had cloisters , a chapter house , a refectory , and housekeeping buildings of all kinds.

Moyne Friary was founded by MacWilliam Burke in 1460 on orders from Pope Nicholas.

The arched entryway and tower date from the seventeenth century.
