Donegal Castle, County Donegal

Any tours of Ireland may take you to County Donegal.

The town of Donegal has a castle right in the centre of the town that is certainly worth visiting.

The castle that gave the county its name towers above local houses and the River Eske.

Its massive tower was built by Red Hugh O’Donnell around 1500 , and is partially decorated with ornamental bands.

The three storey Manor House built beside the tower dates from around 1620.

That was built by Sir Basil Brooke.

He also commissioned the magnificent chimney-piece inside.

That is worth looking at , as it is finely decorated with carved fruit and the coat of arms of Sir Basil Brooke.

The castle was refurbished in the 1990s and is very well done.

You truly feel that you are living in the period as you walk around.
