Dublin Castle

Dublin Castle

The  center of British authority in Ireland until 1922.

It was built by King John of England in 1204.

The original castle corresponded in extent with the present Upper Castle Yard , flanked on each corner by a great circular tower , beneath one of which , the Powder Tower , an earlier Viking fortification was excavated.

Other than these towers , much of the existing structure is the result of extensive rebuilding between 1730 and 1800. This includes the first floor State Apartments where Irish presidents are inaugrated , and where John F Kennedy was received in 1963.

The castle has recently been adapted as a forum for European Union and other meetings , and also for state tribunals.
