30 Apr Hooks Head and Arthurstown
What a great name for this hidden gem ! Its worth a visit on any tours of Ireland and especially if you like maritime history…..as well as a view !!!
Hooks Head is the site of one of Europes oldest lighthouses. Since early Christian times a beacon was attended by monks , beginning with the Welsh missionary “Dubhan” (dubhan is the Irish word for hook )
Monastic cells at the base of the current tower , which is built on its Norman predecessor , can be examined with permission from the lighthouse attendants.
Nearby is another hidden gem on any Ireland tours……Arthurstown ! The sandy beaches make it a nice walk or for the brave maybe even a swim.
It is hidden gems like this make Ireland worth exploring and moving off the beaten track.
