08 Jan Irish Tower Houses
Irish Tower Houses are tall , often four or five-story castles erected in the fifteenth , sixteenth , and early seventeenth centuries.
Affluent Irish landowners built these tower houses and defenses, status symbols, and homes for their families and retainers.
Sparsely furnished within, the houses somtimes had an outer protective wall.
You will see at least one on any tours of Ireland….if you do not you will have missed a must see attraction.
A good example is Aughnanure Castle outside Galway. It is a lesser known example and a real hidden gem.
At Ireland Luxury Tours we have a great seven day tour that includes Augnanure.
