02 Sep Kenmare, County Kerry
This is one of our favourite places in all of Ireland.
At Ireland and Scotland Luxury Tours we stay at Sheen Falls Lodge and our clients fall in love with the place.
Kenmare’s two main roads are wide and spacious which is unusual in Ireland.
This is because Kenmare was built as a “landlords’ town”.
In 1775 the Marquis of Lansdowne decided what he wanted, the planning was done, and the town was built.
This gives the centre of Kenmare a pleasing architectural harmony, with its rows of substantial limestone buildings.
The economy was once based on ironworks, lead mines, and sea fishing.
Though that is long gone now, and tourism and farming lead the way.
We use Kenmare as our base to tour the Ring of Beara (avoiding the very commercial Ring of Kerry)
Also, we visit Killarney National Park and Muckross Abbey.
It’s a great place to see on any tours of Ireland.
