Kildare is a beautiful place and is easy to visit on any tours of Ireland.

Nearby is the National Stud and Japanese Gardens which we have detailed before on the blog.

With the Curragh not far away, it is a real centre for horse racing.

There is also a very nice “outlet mall” for those of you who are serious shoppers.

Many top designer brands are available at good prices.

Kildare was originally the site of a monastery founded by Saint Brigid around 450 – 520AD

The Cathedral of Saint Brigid began in 1229 has been rebuilt many times.

The most substantial refurbishment was in 1875.

It is worth seeing the cathedral when in Kildare.

For boxing fans there is the nearby “Donnelly’s Hollow” where there is a small obelisk commemorating an 1815 prize fight.

Dan Donnelly, the giant Irish champion, defeated George Cooper of England.

At Ireland and Scotland Luxury Tours we find Kildare a good stopping point as we travel.
