Killone Abbey, County Clare

Killone Abbey, County Clare

This sits near the village of Ennis, and if you are passing on any tours of Ireland, you may want to stop.

The Abbey sits on the shore of Lough Killone and was founded around the same time as Clare Abbey (around 1189).

Interestingly the ruins include a crypt.

Nearby is a Holy Well, and sometimes pilgrimages are still made to this.

From nearby Kilrush you can take a short boat ride to Scattery Island.

The trip begins at Carragh Pier.

The island is only one mile long and a half a mile wide.

It is interesting as it was a sacred spot from the earliest times of Irish Christianity.

Saint Sinan, who died in 554, made the island his retreat and founded a monastery.

There is a well-preserved round tower which is 125 feet tall.

There are also traces of early churches.
