Kilrush and the West Clare Peninsula

Kilrush and the West Clare Peninsula

On Ireland tours there is an opportunity to see Kilrush and the West Clare Peninsula.

The wider tourism cluster of the West Clare Peninsula includes the Victorian seaside town of Kilkee and the traditional villages of Carrigaholt , Kilbaha and Doonbeg , which is now home to an 18 hole championship links golf course designed by Greg Norman.

The most natural feature of the West Clare Peninsula is its rugged Atlantic Coastline , contrasting sharply with the sheltered Shannon Estuary.

An ideal way to experience this contrasting coastline is by taking the Loop Head drive. It takes the visitor around the Loop Head peninsula , through areas of exceptional beauty and through villages of historic and folkloric interest. It leads along the Shannon shore by way of the villages of Doonaha , Carrigaholt and Kilbaha to the lighthouse at Loop Head “where the Shannon meets the sea”. The return journey is along the wild and rugged Atlantic Coast with panoramic views as far as the Cliffs of Moher.

Other highlights include the Bridges of Ross , an important habitat for cliff nesting birds.

Interspersed along the West Clare coastline are fine sandy beaches and harbours. These are ideal for a wide range of activities and leisure pursuits from diving and swimming to sightseeing to walking.

Its a must see attraction on any tours of Ireland.
