South of Galway City is a picturesque fishing village with breath-taking views of Galway Bay is a hidden gem and worth a visit on your Ireland tours. The annual Crinniu na mBad Festival (The Gathering of the Boats) features the racing of the country’s traditional sailing craft , the Galway hooker.
The festival commemorates the time when boats crossed Galway Bay from Connemara to bring turf to the otherwise fuel-less villages of The Burren. Nearby is the beautifully sited Dunguaire Castle. This 16th century fortified tower has been well restored and there are guided tours. Its occupants over the centuries included Oliver St. John Gogarty , the renowned author , poet , surgeon and ‘wit’ (Buck Mulligan in Ulysses). Medieval banquets are held here in summer.
