The oldest surviving part of the Palace dates from the 16th century, when James V constructed new royal lodgings. Much of the building visitors see today was later rebuilt during the reign of Charles II.
Its location at the foot of the Royal Mile makes Holyroodhouse an ideal companion to a visit to Edinburgh Castle, with the historic heart of the city stretching between the two.
Our Favourite – The Edinburgh Dungeon
For something completely different, our personal favourite is
The Edinburgh Dungeon.
The attraction uses live actors, theatrical sets, special effects and rides to bring around 1,000 years of Edinburgh and Scottish history to life.
Rather than presenting history like a traditional museum, the Dungeon focuses on some of the city’s darker and more colourful stories.
Characters and stories include Burke and Hare, witch trials, the city’s underground vaults and Edinburgh’s notorious historic criminals.
It is entertaining, theatrical and deliberately a little frightening, making it an enjoyable contrast to Edinburgh’s more traditional historic attractions.
Take Time to Experience Edinburgh
Edinburgh is not a destination we recommend rushing.
Spend time exploring the Royal Mile, wander through the Old Town, enjoy the city’s restaurants and pubs, and leave some flexibility in your itinerary for places you discover along the way.
This is particularly important on a luxury tour of Scotland. The aim should not simply be to tick attractions off a list, but to actually experience the places you visit.
