15 Apr Milnathort, Kinross-shire
This is a busy market town in Kinross-shire.
It’s a great stop on any tours of Scotland.
Just East of the town is Burleigh Castle.
This is a fine tower house dating from about 1500.
It has no roof but is otherwise quite complete.
There is an angle tower, with a corbelled square cap-house dated 1582.
The castle was the ancient seat of the Balfours of Burleigh.
There are substantial 5-foot-thick walls which rise to corbels that once supported a parapet walk.
Sadly the roof and internal floors are now gone , but the vaulted basement remains.
The turnpike stair in the north-east corner originally led up to a caphouse which gave access to the parapet walk.
It is a real hidden gem and at Ireland and Scotland Luxury Tours we enjoy showing clients these sights “of the beaten track”.
At Ireland and Scotland Luxury Tours we have safe private tours available.
