Muckross Abbey, County Kerry

Muckross Abbey, County Kerry

This abbey sits near Killarney, on the east of Muckross Lake.

It stands in the middle of Bourne-Vincent Memorial Park.

Muckross Abbey is well worth a visit on any tours of Ireland.

The abbey was built some 570 years ago, and is well preserved.

Muckross was founded in 1448 as a Franciscan Friary for the Observantine Franciscans.

It is surrounded by ancient yew trees and ash trees which make it an interesting setting.

As with all Franciscan churches its large tower was added later.

This tower is unique in Ireland in that it extends the full width of the nave.

Check out the graveyard which has both ancient and modern graves.

We recommend the pony and trap rides that take you around the abbey and nearby Muckross House.

These let you mix with the very local operators and enjoy the sights in a way that takes you back in history.
