Ormond Castle, County Tipperary

This castle sits on the East side of Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary.

It is worth visiting on any tours of Ireland as it is a bit of a hidden gem.

Ormond Castle was the palace of the Butlers, an important family of the time.

They were the Dukes of Ormond.

The castle/manor house was built around 1560 by Thomas Butler.

There are the remains of an older building dating from the 1400’s.

The castle stands in a beautiful park.

It is an Elizabethan structure, which was enlarged for the Queen herself in 1568.

It is embellished with plaster medallions of animals from the Ormond coat of arms in the West wing.

In the portal there are plaster portraits of Queen Elizabeth the First, and Thomas the Earl of Ormond.

A restored portion of the mansion gives some idea of its appearance at the time of Queen Elizabeth the First.
