Rowallane Gardens, County Down

Rowallane Garden, County Down, May 2012 (21)

We have had a number of tours of Ireland where clients have been interested in gardens.

Rowallane has always been a favourite on those tours.

The gardens are in Saintfield , County Down.

It is a garden of exceptional interest and beauty.

It was started by Mr Hugh Armytage Moore in a wasteland of whines and outcrops of rocks.

The trees he planted back then have grown to give shelter and to possess a charm of their own.

The gardens consist of fifty acres of undulating ground.

That ground is divided into a series of gardens , each almost self-contained , and each with its characteristic features.

The specialist gardener can find outstanding magnolias , cherries , and wall plants.

There is a magnificent collection of rhododendron species and hybrids.

Add to that the exotic Chilean and Chinese shrubs , and Rowallane is well worth a visit.
