31 Jan The Book of Durrow
Everyone on tours of Ireland has heard of the ” Book of Kells”
But a real hidden gem is the “Book of Durrow”
It is a copy of the Gospels and one of Europes most important manuscripts , surviving from around 700 A.D
Of uncertain provenance (Ireland or Britain) , the Book of Durrow was long kept at the site of the Columban Monastery at Durrow , County Offaly.
Then it was given to Trinity College , Dublin , in the seventeenth century.
The manuscript is richly adorned with spiral and interlace ornament….quite spectacular for its age.
Why not check it out on Ireland tours….not many know about it.
Dont forget Dublin is accessible on one of our Belfast tours in a private luxury vehicle with driver/guide.
