Dundrum

Dundrum

On a day tour out of Belfast or on our tours of Ireland we at Ireland Luxury Tours will encourage you to get a sight of the Mountains of Mourne. On the way we will pass through Dundrum village.

Home of the Mourne Seafood Bar , as mentioned in our previous post , Dundrum is abeautiful village on the South East coast of County Down. Dundrum offers a range of amenities and attractions that are equally popular with residents and holidaymakers throughout the year.

To the south of the village are great views of the Mourne Mountains and to the north there are views of Dundrum Castle.  It is also ideally placed as a base for walking and bird watching.  There are a number of accommodation options in the village ranging from self-catering apartments to luxury B&B’s.  In addition to the accommodation in Dundrum the nearby resort town of Newcastle offers a wide range of hotels.

No trip is complete without a visit to Dundrum Castle and a stroll along one of the many footpaths in the area.  In addition to walking and bird watching within Dundrum, Murlough Nature Reserve and the Mourne Mountains offer even more options for outdoor pursuits and some of the best scenery in County Down and the whole of Northern Ireland.

Overlooking Dundrum are the ruins of Dundrum Castle, considered one of the finest Norman castles in Northern Ireland. Built by John de Courcy at the end of the 12th Century, the castle had a colourful history that culminated in its sacking by Cromwell’s army in the 1650’s. The circular keep is still intact and accessible, offering stunning views over the surrounding coutryside and out to sea.
