07 Jun River Shannon
The longest river in Ireland or Britain.
The Shannon rises in the “Shannon Pot” in County Cavan …..It forms an estuary west of Limerick City…..and it flows into the Atlantic at “Loop Head” in County Clare.
Its total length is 214 miles.
Formerly an important north-south traffic artery , it is now used mainly for pleasure cruising. It is linked with Lough Erne , in the North of Ireland through the Ballinamore-Ballyconnell Canal.
At Ireland Luxury Tours we have a fantastic cruising package with Manor House Marine which allows you to fully explore the river and travel the length of the whole system.
In its course , the Shannon feeds two important lakes (Ree and Derg).
In 1926-1930 water was diverted from the river to create the countrys first major hydroelectric scheme at Ardnacrusha in County Clare.
You will come across the Shannon on most Ireland tours…. but cruising is a fantastic way to see Ireland in a very different way.
