Inishmurray, County Sligo

This is a small island off the coast at Sligo.

It is a true hidden gem on any tours of Ireland.

Though there is a boat journey, which can be rough, to get to the island.

The island has a well-preserved monastery.

The monastery is said to have been founded around 520 AD by Saint Molaise.

Saint Molaise was a mysterious figure and was also associated with Devenish Island in Lough Erne.

A tall, wide stone wall broken by five gateways forms an oval barricade that is somewhat narrower at one end.

The space inside this wall is divided into four sections, each with its own church and a number of beehive monks huts.

There are also a number of ornamented gravestones to see.

There also used to be several “curse stones” on the island.

It is said that circling them a number of times while praying ensured that a specific person would suffer your wrath.
