Ardmore Cathedral, County Waterford

The monastery in Ardmore was founded in the 5th century.

It is located in the seaside village near Waterford and is commonly known as Saint Declan’s Monastery.

It is an interesting stop on any tours of Ireland.

The monastery became a Cathedral in 1152.

The round tower was built in the 12th century.

Pay particular attention to the beautiful west window.

The blind arcades on the interior walls of the church are especially striking.

St Declan’s Stone Oratory is floored with large ancient flagstones.

The Oratory actually contains an empty grave recess.

Apparently, pilgrims used to remove earth from the hole and take it away.

If you are in Waterford, take the time to visit Ardmore.
