05 Jan Kilmainham Gaol , Dublin
Another unusual hidden gem for any Ireland tours.
Kilmainham Gaol is in Dublin. It is a famous , or perhaps infamous , prison first opened in 1796.
It was an ordinary prison , which also housed political prisoners such as the “United Irishmen” and “Young Irelanders”.
“Charles Stewart Parnell” and leaders fo the “Easter Rising” were executed at the gaol.
During the Irish Civil War republicans were also imprisoned and executed in Kilmainham.
It was closed in 1924 and turned into a museum in 1966.
If you are on tours of Ireland which take in Dublin it is well worth a visit. It illustrates a topical part of Irish history.
