27 Jul Rock of Cashel , County Tipperary
The earliest of the building which crown St. Patrick’s Rock is the perfectly preserved Round Tower. Cormac’s Chapel , which was consecrated in 1134 , is next in date. The roofless cathedral which joins the two was erected between 1235 and 1270 , though its tower is a possible 14th century addition. The bishop’s castle which adjoins the cathedral was built in the 15th century , as was the adjacent Hall of the Vicars Choral , through which you enter the complex.
Cashel first became a royal seat with the Kings of Munster in the 4th or 5th century , and continued as such until 1101 when Muirceartaigh O’Briain handed over the rock to the Church.
