17 Feb Kerry Head , County Kerry
High above the wave-lashed cliffs of Kerry Head , at the most Westerly point of the headland , stand two 2000 year old promontory forts , stone built defences strung across the neck of sea-girt promontories to reduce the area of attack. Today only crumbling semicircles of stone wall a few feet high and acres of wild , wind-blown bogland in front. To reach them , follow the Southern coast road until it becomes a track through a farmyard and across bogland.
A few miles along the same road from Ballyheige , close to the sea , is a number of souterrains – underground chambers – with a group of corbelled beehive houses.
Kerry Head has some spectacular views and is a must see on your tours of Ireland.
