03 Oct Browne’s Hill Dolmen
The first positive evidence of human settlement in Ireland is to be found in a variety of burial grounds. Some of this date back to 6000 BC!
These are in the form of “court cairns”, “passage graves”, “gallery graves”, and “portal dolmens”.
In a pasture near Carlow the Browne’s Hill Dolmen marks the entrance to a Stone Age grave site.
It is the largest in Ireland, with its capstone estimated to weigh over a hundred tons.
The considerable feat of raising it was accomplished by building a mound, dragging the capstone up on it, then digging the earth away and carting it off.
At Ireland and Scotland Luxury Tours we will try and incorporate this history into your tour of Ireland.
