The River Tummel ruins in and out of the narrow strip of the loch of the same name before uniting with the River Garry just south of the Pass of Killiecrankie. Until 1950 the river then continued its flow through the town of Pitlochry to join the Tay, but in that year a dam was constructed just north of the town as part of the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board’s Tummel Valley scheme. So, the two-and-a-half-mile-long Loch Faskally was created, enhancing what was already one of Scotland’s most celebrated beauty spots. The Pass of Killiecrankie, just to the north through the glens, is where Viscount Dundee fought and won a battle for the Jacobite cause in 1689; the victory was ultimately futile, however, and he lost his own life into the bargain.
