This ancient building is in Kirkcudbrightshire.
Sweetheart Abbey is one of the most beautiful monastic ruins in Scotland.
It is built in red sandstone and worth visiting on any tours of Scotland.
It was founded in the 13th century by Devorguila, Lady of Galloway.
The Abbey, built in 1273, was the last pre-reformation Cistercian foundation in Scotland.
The monks moved from Dundrennan to this Abbey.
In 1289 Devorguila, Lady of Galloway, was buried in front of the high altar.
Whilst a lot of the Abbey is in ruins the precinct wall, enclosing some 30 acres, is very well preserved.
Repeated finds of Iron Age and Dark Age glass beads on the Abbey site suggest an earlier settlement on this spot.
