17 Jun Dunguaire Castle, County Galway
This castle sits on the shores of Galway Bay.
As you travel to and from the Cliffs of Moher, Dunguaire is worth seeing on any tours of Ireland.
It bridges 13 centuries as it stands on the 7th Century site of the stronghold belonging to the “King of Connacht”.
A descendant built the present castle in 1520.
In the 1640’s the castle passed into the hands of the Martyn family of Galway.
Richard Martyn was the Mayor of Galway.
The family retained the castle until very recent times.
The castle is in good condition and gives a real feel of the times.
It is open for visitors and even holds Medieval Banquets.
They serve Sangria at these banquets as this was a drink introduced to Galway by the survivors of the Spanish Armada.
Please be careful visiting the castle as the road which you have to cross can be dangerous with traffic.
