This castle stands above the Cam-cor River and dominates the town of Birr, County Offaly.

The castle was rebuilt around a ruined medieval keep in 1620.
It was rebuilt by Sir Laurence Parsons.
The castle was of significant military importance throughout the seventeenth century.
It is currently the home of The 7th Earl of Rosse, and as such the residential areas of the castle are not open to the public.
Though the grounds and gardens of the demesne are publicly accessible.
The remains of the Great Telescope, built by the third Earl, still stands in the grounds.
There is also a lake to enjoy and that was constructed by Sir William Parsons in the eighteenth century.
