Aran Islands, County Galway

Dun Aengus 2017 - Inis Mor, Ireland

There are three Aran Islands – Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer.

They have been inhabited long before recorded history and contain many pre-Christian and Early-Christian remains.

If you are on any tours of Ireland, you will need the weather to be on your side to visit these islands.

Dun Aengus stone fort on Inishmore is one of Europe’s finest prehistoric monuments.

It could date from as long ago as 4000 BC.

It sits on the edge of a 200-foot cliff and is spectacular.

There are four semi-circular defensive walls.

Outside is an additional barrier of thousands of upright limestone pillars placed at various angles.

The islands have always attracted writers and film makers.

The locals speak Irish generally, but are equally fluent in English.

At Ireland and Scotland Luxury Tours we can arrange a visit to the islands if the weather allows us.
