11 Feb Aran Islands, County Galway
If you are on an extended tour of Ireland you can fly from Galway to the Aran Islands.
They are very interesting and a great place to visit.
There are many churches, crosses, and gravestones to explore.
There are also Dolmens to be seen.
A race known as the Firbolgs were likely the earliest inhabitants of the Aran Islands.
After being defeated by the Tuatha de Dannan, and taxed highly by the king (around the first century AD), they established a new home on the islands.
In 490 AD Saint Enda founded a cloister near Killeany.
This became the place where many Saints, such as Ciaran and Finian, were schooled.
Dun Aengus is a huge prehistoric fort (built by the Firbolgs) and has to be seen if you are visiting.
One of our favourite sights is the large cross near Temple Brecan.
