03 Oct Athlone, County Westmeath
Not everyone on tours of Ireland visits this interesting town.
But you should!
It has a lot of boating traffic that is on the Shannon, and a great mooring situation.
The town sits at the southern end of Lough Ree, one of the Shannon’s three major lakes.
That brings a lot of visitors.
You can fish, sail, row, cruise, swim, or water-ski.
But for me the most impressive feature is Athlone Castle.
It sits at the western end of the Shannon Bridge.
Athlone Castle has been a strategic military post since the 13th century.
It is an imposing sight.
Athlone was also the birthplace of the first great star of the Gramophone.
John McCormack lived in the Bawn and a bust of him is placed on the riverside promenade.
