18 Jul Aughnanure Castle , Oughterard , County Galway
Built in the 15th century by the O’Flahertys , during the Cromwellian era this was one of the outposts guarding Galway and proved to be among the strongest fortresses in Ireland. The remains include a six storey tower which stands on a rock island. One of the ‘duties’ of the Chief who ruled here it appears , was to sleep with each woman surrounding the settlement on her wedding night!
Aughnanure Castle is a real hidden gem and a must see on your tours of Ireland.
On any of our Ireland tours we try and get clients to stay in nearby Ballynahinch Castle and visit Aughnanure.
Some even have a round of golf on the super Oughterard Golf Club just beside the castle.
