The little village that sits just North of Galway City is famous for its Abbey , which is the only church in the English-speaking world where Mass has been continuously celebrated over 750 years , despite the suppression of religious communities by Henry VIII , its unroofing by Cromwellian troops , and the Penal Laws.
Excavations have unearthed the papal seal bestowed on the Abbey by Pope Pius II in 1463 , portions of the cloister arcade which has been re-erected , and a hospice for pilgrims on their way to Croagh Patrick.
This quaint village and Abbey are real hidden gems and a must see on your Ireland tours.
