11 Feb Belfast Castle, County Antrim
This is a castle overlooking the city of Belfast, with panoramic views.
It sits on the site of a much older Viking fort.
If your tours of Ireland take you North the castle is worth looking at.
The current castle was built in 1867 by the third Marquis of Donegal (who was the Earl of Shaftsburys grandfather)
It was built in the Scottish Baronial style.
The Shaftsbury family occupied the castle up until 1916.
In 1934 the Earl decided to move to England permanently.
He gifted the castle and its magnificent grounds to the city of Belfast.
The castle and the grounds now serve as a public park of 750 acres.
There are beautiful flower beds to be admired around the castle.
